Gear Up for your First Job Interview 0

Feb12

You have probably become fairly accustomed to dressing casually for school with a wardrobe consisting of jeans, shirts, and tennis shoes. And why not? Jeans are way more comfortable than slacks and dress shoes don’t hold a candle to a comfy pair of sandals. Unfortunately, these items are best left to the back of the closet when it comes to dressing appropriately for a job interview.

The first step in this process is to find out the dress code of the dental office or clinic ahead of time by observing what the employees wear. Is it business casual or uniforms? Whichever the case, you should plan to dress as if you already work there - only a tad better.

Men and women should avoid wearing perfume and cologne altogether. There are many people who don’t enjoy strange odors and scents; so as not to offend anyone, leave the fragrance bottle alone.

Another interview no-no is displaying tattoos and body piercings. These can be fun when you’re hanging out with friends; however, they can be very distracting to the interviewer. Remember to cover up your tattoos and remove multiple body piercings before the interview. You want the employer’s full attention to be on your skill and talent.

Ladies, save the loud colors, heavy makeup, and big jewelry for nights out with the girls. These items can give the impression that you are not serious about work and can leave a negative impression with the interviewer. Focus instead on wearing clean, barely-there makeup, minimal jewelry, and remember to stay away from nail polish unless it is clear.

Men should sport a fresh haircut with a face that is clean-shaven on the day of the interview. It is a great idea for women to wear long hair pulled neatly back into a bun or a low ponytail. For those with shorter hair, keep it neat and polished as well.

The best clothing styles for a job interview are conservative and neutral. Think navy blue, black, dark brown and grey for color choices. Women avoid open-toe shoes and mules.

Your personal fashion is a statement of you; however, there is a time and place to express yourself. Your goal for the job interview is to present a professional image that conveys respect and motivation to the employer. So dust off those dress shoes and press those shirts because you never get a second chance to make a great first impression!

How To Write A College Recommendation Letter 0

Feb12

Prospective college students are usually required to submit personal recommendations as part of their application. These recommendations often come from teachers and guidance counselors. Sometimes, however, students ask others such as employers, volunteer coordinators, clergy, family friends and neighbors to write recommendations for them. If you are asked to write a college recommendation for a student, here are some guidelines to help you write a useful letter.

1. Ask the student questions before writing the letter. Ask what colleges he is applying to and what he will be majoring in. Also, ask if there is anything specific he would like you to include in the letter. You don’t have to put it, but he may have some ideas that you think are good that you may not have thought of on your own.

2. College admission officers mainly want to know that the prospective student has the skills necessary to be successful in school. When writing your letter, focus on the positive qualities that you know the student has that will help him succeed. Organizational skills, determination, time management, problem solving skills and responsibility are all good areas to focus on. If you can, give concrete ways in which you’ve seen the student display these skills.

3. Focus mainly on skills that are relevant to success in college and the major. If your babysitter asks for a recommendation and she is planning to major in economics, focus on skills such as reliability and problem solving skills, not on her great ability with kids. However, if she is majoring in early childhood education, focus on her skills with children.

4. Once you know what you want to say, here is how to organize a one page letter. First, introduce how you know the student and how long you’ve known her. You can say something like, “I have been Jane Doe’s manager at McDonalds for two years, and I am glad to recommend her to your school.” Then, get right into the qualities you see that she has that will make her a successful student and an asset to their school. Finish up with a paragraph that includes a sentence like, “If have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at…” Rarely will a school call, but they like to have the option.

5. One big don’t - Don’t allow the student to write the letter and have you just sign it.

I Want Confidence 0

Feb12

I have to hire many people to accomplish what I do. Naturally, I want good, clean, straight-forward resumes. I want to see what the applicant has done and, by extension, what he or she might be able to do for me. From my perspective, it’s all about what I need in order to grow my business.

Most applicants look at it from the other perspective: what will the application and interview process do for them? Too often, it seems to me, they look at the resume, the application, and the cover letter as the end of the process. Well, for them - and for me - it is only the beginning. If you don’t look at it in the same way, then it will be the end.

And the most important item that never shows up is confidence. It’s not educational experience; not work experience; not references. Most of the people who apply for work have those things already in place. What they often fail to show me on paper or in the interview is the confidence they have in themselves to get the job, do the job and grow in the job.

If you bring your confidence and your faith in yourself, most employers will see exactly what they are seeking in you. Then, all the weaknesses and shortcomings on your resume will disappear. Lack of experience, mediocre grades in school, youth - all the things that you think of as disadvantages - will be diminished.

Be confident on Paper

The first place you can demonstrate confidence is in a cover letter. I’m sure you’ve heard that the cover letter tells the employer those important things that a resume can’t communicate. Well, the most important is your belief in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should I believe that you’re the one for the job I have in mind?

So, when you “fill in the gaps” in your resume, be sure that you explain why you are sure that you can do this job; even more importantly, that you are the right person for this job. Tell me how experiences that don’t show up on the resume help you have confidence in yourself. Some life experiences that show personal confidence and a health self-esteem are:

Membership or leadership in scouting or youth groups
Success on sports teams
Accomplishment of a personal goal, such as running a marathon, or building a soapbox racer.
Playing a musical instrument (the long years of practice and learning only come to those who believe in themselves).

These are things that may never show up on a resume, but which tell me something about your belief in yourself; your discipline, your faith in your own future. Those are the kinds of people any employer should be seeking.

And don’t be afraid to say it clearly: “I believe that I am the right person for this position, and I look forward to the opportunity to prove it to you.”

Be Confident in Person

Whether you’re on the phone or in a face-to-face meeting, be confident that you are the one. Before a phone or personal interview, look into a mirror and tell yourself why you believe you will succeed in the interview; why you will get the job; why you will prove to everyone that your are the right choice for this position. In a way, you are your own coach, giving yourself a great pep talk before the game.

But it is not a game; the interview is serious business. That’s why you must have good reasons to support your belief in yourself. “I want,” “I really need,” and “I’ve been rejected so many times,” are not the reasons you’re looking for, and they are not the reasons that will persuade an employer. Remember, the person who is hiring has needs, too; the needs for a competent, reliable, honest, dedicated worker who believes in his or her ability to do the job, and to be a part of the team.

So convince yourself of your worth and your ability. Be confident on paper and in person. Believe in yourself, and let your self-confidence come through in the way you sit, the way you answer questions, and in the kinds of questions you ask. Show that you’re the one who is looking forward to joining this organization.

And believe it; don’t try to fake it. If you don’t have the confidence you need, then go out and get it. Get more education; get wider experience by volunteering or taking on extra jobs; get involved in church or community activities to test your ability to work with others and get the interpersonal experience you need.

But, more than anything else believe in you. If you do, your confidence will come through in every aspect of your writing and speaking. You will be showing me and any other employer that you are the one.

How Do I Find A Mortgage Company To Work For? 0

Feb12

If you are not going to open your own company right away, you will need to work for another company to get some experience. And depending on your state laws, you might have to get some experience before they even let you open your own company.

Your best bet is to choose a mortgage company that has a large presence in your area and that does its own marketing to bring borrowers to them. Many mortgage companies do very little company sponsored marketing and expect their brokers to get their own loans, and to do their own marketing.

Secondly, look for one that offers a training program. These mortgage companies are few in number, but when you start, training is essential. There are many things that could go wrong with a loan, and the more you know the better off you are. Plus you will instill more confidence in your borrowers when you can confidently answer their questions.

If you are looking to get training elsewhere you can try your local real estate school, community college, and of course you can visit several websites on the net.

Thirdly, it should be easy for you to make money. The commission split should be at least at 50%. There should be no monthly fees. And training should not cost you anything either.

Most mortgage companies are always looking for new brokers. Others do not want new brokers. The best way to find a mortgage company to work for is to search the want ads to see who is looking. Once you get into the business, you will get a feel for the market and learn about opportunities at other companies. The companies that hire the most, also loose the most people, and are mainly interested in churning. This same thing happens in the real estate industry.

According to popular belief, everyone has at least a couple loans in them. Once they get into the business, they tell all their relatives and friends. These relatives and friends then let this person do their loans. After the new broker runs out of friends and relatives that need a loan, they stop earning money, and eventually quit to find another job. So the company hires as many people as it can in order to get to the friends and relatives.

If you take this profession seriously, and do the right things from the beginning, this will not happen to you.

Once you get some experience and develop a track record of being successful, you will be able to walk into any mortgage company and get a job. And as you do more loans, your commission split should also increase. If it does not, look for another place or start your own company. And once you can demonstrate that you can originate a large number of loans, you should be offered a salary in addition to your commission. What you negotiate with your boss is up to you. But if you are making the company money, they will want to keep you and should increase your compensation.

The new trend in the industry is to offer brokers 100% commission. Every company has it’s own guidelines, but under this plan, you keep the entire Origination Fee and any Yield Spread Premium. The company gets a set fee per loan and also a desk fee per month. These companies offer almost no training, so it might not be a good idea to start at one of these places, but once you get going, you might consider it. It is almost the same as opening your own company, but without the overhead.
